Nostalgia's Corner: Tears For Fears' Pale Shelter

Originally by Tears For Fears released in March of 1982, “Pale Shelter” failed to chart and was thus re-recorded for the album The Hurting, which became the more popularly known version of the song. It eventually reached #5 on the UK rock charts in 1985.

Written by Roland Orzabal, but sung by bassist, Curt Smith, the song discusses being disappointed in a relationship. Orzabal has been quoted as saying the song tends to focus more on a parent/child relationship than a romantic one.

The song has been featured in clothing ads by H&M and others in the past, but it’s most recent use as a sample in The Weeknd’s “Secrets” is likely most recognizable.
